Yesterday I noted approvingly that swimmer Amanda Beard is posing for Playboy. So you might think I'd also approve of the way pole vaulter Allison Stokke has become an internet sensation because of her good looks.
Well, I don't. Take a look at this YouTube interview of Stokke (which has been viewed nearly 30,000 times) and you'll see why:
One difference between Stokke and Beard is obvious: Stokke is still in high school while Beard is a grown woman.
The other difference between Stokke and Beard is that Beard has accomplished what she set out to do in her athletic career and is now choosing to pursue a career in modeling. Stokke shows in the interview that she's serious about her sport and wants to focus on that, and she's had internet stardom thrust upon her. If, some day, Stokke chooses to pose for Playboy, fine. But right now, it's a little creepy that a young woman who's still in high school is garnering this kind of attention.

oh come on...it's pathetic that men objectify women in the first place, so what you're saying is that you will wait until Stokes is legal age and then you'll objectify her...LOL...oh yes, you are an upstanding, considerate man. Tell me, why should women pose for sexual pictures to be considered "attractive?" You know, the ones with head thrown back, tons of makeup to make her look animal-like, big red lipstick to promote fellatio, and all the rest of the stupid stuff. Would you want your other or your daughter to pose like that? No, so therefore, you don't respect those women who do. Get a grip, buddy...you're no different than all the men on "To Catch a Predator."

Points for trying, Michael. I think you WANT to be sincere. But it still comes off as somewhat disingenuous, especially when you look at how women are portrayed generally in the sports blogsophere.
(Not that there's anything wrong with that, boys, don't go ape sh** on me. Ogle, drool, objectify all you want...)
Look, I'm a chick and even I have to admit Stokke is flat-out beautiful.
But the key difference between her and Amanda Beard is that Stokke has not made a choice to focus on her sexuality. She's an athlete. And it would be nice if you guys would treat her as one.
Not to mention, if ya'll want to impress her, maybe you should spend a little less time drooling and a little more time learning about pole vaulting (the Wide World of Sports, not Vivid, kind).

Kudos, Michael, for trying to care.
But part of me thinks it's a touch disingenuous, given the way women are treated generally in the sports blogsphere.
Before you guys go off on me, know I don't care if you drool, ogle and/or objectify. Have a good ole time. And hey, I'm a chick and even I think Stoke is flat-out beautiful. What heterosexual male isn't going to want to look?
But in this case, her looks should be the sidebar, not the main story. And not just because of her age.
Unlike Amanda Beard, Allison Stoke has not set out to sexualize herself. She's an athlete, apparently a very good one. It would be nice if sports fans could treat her as such.
And if that argument doesn't work, consider this: you're likely to garner more positive response from her if instead of drooling over her pic, you learn a little bit about the sport she loves (the "Wide World of Sports" kind, not the Vivid kind).

Please...these women, whether they are adult film stars, athletes, moms, etc, they are making their OWN decision to pose in these magazines. No, not all people view these magazines as tastful or clssy, but to each their own. I probably wouldn't want my daughter to pose, but who am I to judge other people for doing what they want? And for Jo, how do you know if writer would approve of his daughters posing? Aside from assuming, you don't. Men do not objectify women, they do it themseles. No one is forcing girl to pose nude, no one is forcing women to wear certan clothes, or put on make-up, these are all personal choices girls make. Now, women mayso, "no, no, guys have expectations and wants regarding women so we feel like we have to oblige." My only response to this argument is that men will not stop liking women if they were baggier clothes or less make-up, but we may not look at the same girls the same way, and everyone knows this. That being said, it makes sense that girls wear the clothes they wear, the make-up, pose in magazines because it makes them feel good, individually. People need to stop judging people on their values, but be open-minded about other people's decisions.

God you people are pathetic.
A) She's 18
B) Maybe if she isn't comfortable with stardom, she shouldn't have, I don't know, DONE AN ONLINE INTERVIEW. She's an adult and she made her choice to be taped and have her image thrown around on the Internet. You need to find better molehills to make mountains out of, Mike.

Wow....an 18 year old girl who also happens to be insanely hot is being looked at by men in a sexual manner...what's this world coming to?
Gimmie and f'n break. It's biological babies. Put a really hot girl in front of a guy and we will look. It's not really a choice; its like jerking your knee when the doctor smashes the hammer on it, or laughing when you hear Paris Hilton is going to jail. Same thing really.

Forget she's an adult for a second and pretend she's 17. What's wrong with getting attention? She's an attractive individual and drew the admiration of the public. I think it's harmless attention.

B Peps, that's a funny acronym. Did she know this was going to be posted on YouTube and tons of people would be looking at it? Also, she's probably used to people commenting on her looks and being admired for them. It's her choice, whatever.

I don't agree she or her father should have done an interview with the Washington Post at all, but also as a brother to 3 sisters, 2 who played collegiate sports, I'd be pissed off if I saw my sister oogled by men all over the 'net.
This is a 18 year old high school student, not an adult looking for fame.
I can see where the dad is coming from, and I'd feel the same way...

Yeah she's hot, of course she's gonna draw attention from men, and probably some women too. Its all harmless fun, of course im sure there will be the odd weirdo that might get funny ideas about tracking her down to convince her she's 'the one'. So i feel no guilt in ogling her and admiring her gorgousness, at the end of the day its power to her, just like many glamour models outthere, they're not objects. They are beautiful people showing off what they've got and at the same time they got the power to say 'you aint got a chance in hell mate' :)
