Amanda Beard Hits the Cover of Playboy

Last month we pointed out that Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard is posing in Playboy. Now SI's Extra Mustard has noted that the cover of Playboy's July issue (which hits newsstands Friday, June 8) features Beard, topless but using a well-placed forearm to keep things safe for work.

Beard, who won three medals in the 1996 Olympics at the age of 14, has previously appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and in FHM, but next month's Playboy is her first appearance in the nude.

This will no doubt raise questions about whether Beard is demeaning herself or demeaning women's sports, but I don't really get that. Beard has a positive public image, and as BloggingStocks has noted, featuring women like Beard is a part of Playboy's business model. Athletes male and female have hot bodies, and athletes male and female use those hot bodies to make money and sell products. Good for them.

UPDATE: Watch Amanda Beard talk about Playboy with David Letterman.
