Track and field star Marion Jones has admitted to using steroids prior to the 2000 Olympics and will plead guilty to lying to a grand jury about it, the Washington Post is reporting.
It has long been known that Jones had a connection to Balco, but Jones has always denied that Balco supplied her with steroids. However, Jones sent close friends and family members a letter recently in which she said she had, in fact, used steroids.
Jones, who won five medals at the Sydney Olympics, said she took the steroid known as "the clear" for two years beginning in 1999, according to the letter, which was read to The Washington Post by a person who had been given a copy of it. A person familiar with Jones's legal situation who requested anonymity confirmed the relevant facts that were described in the letter....Jones will now almost certainly be stripped of the five medals (three gold, two bronze) she won in the 2000 Games. She may also go to prison. And the reputation of a person who was once considered the greatest female athlete in the world has been forever changed.
"I want to apologize for all of this," she said, according to the person reading the letter, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "I am sorry for disappointing you all in so many ways."

Nothing can sway what the IOC and track's GB will do. I commend the woman for her bravery and honesty. No legal charges should be imposed. She is still a great athlete and the temptation to do what so many lesser athletes are doing is a major temptation.

Victor Conte should sue her. What a disgrace. She lied and lied and lied and at the same time was calling Conte the liar. Not that he's a saint, by any stretch, but it appears he's the most honest one in this entire web of nastiness. Every dog has its day.

matsura: You want to commend her for the "honesty?" You have a strange idea of honesty. She cheated, she prospered as a result, and only confessed when she didn't have an alternative. She is dishonest. Legal charges and strip her of the medals she cheated to obtain, that is the least that should happen.

It is sad that Marion Jones resorted to steroids to improve her performances. It seems like another blemish to track and field. However, track and field (along with pro cycling) has instituted testing procedures to "catch" the culprits, where most of the other pro sports have instituted testing procedures to "not catch" the culprits. If suddenly Pro Baseball, Football, Hockey, Basketball, and boxing were to institute testing procedures similar to T&F and Pro Cycling, the world would be in "shock" over the amount of usage. Unfortunately, the governing bodies of those sports, want it all swept under the carpet.

It is really a sad thing when all of these great athletes have to resort to drugs in order to win. And to lie to a Grand Jury is not a good thing ever. Those medals were not earned and should be taken back and she should have to pay what anyone else would for lying to the Grand Jury. Another life ruined.

It is such a shame how the desire for performance and the big business driving major sports these days has resulted in such pervasive use of performance enhancing drugs. It seem to have seeped into every segment of sports in our society, the depth of which is just beginning to be understood. Makes me appreciate a guy like Griffey Jr. all the more. Perhaps he could have staved off some of his injuries by following suit. Nice to see he didn't succumb as many other apparently have, and carved out a great career doing things the "right way". Wonder who the next big revelation is going to expose? I think as more and more is investigated and determined we will all be shocked by how many will eventually be implicated in this mess. It is incredible how widespread the impact of that steroid factory known as Balco apparently was! And we are just beginning to ferret out those involved. I am sure there will be many more to follow. Again, such a shame!

so far people keep saying what a great athlete she was, but actually she was a mediocre athlete who could only excel after using steroids for 2 years.

I think with steroids, where there's smoke, there's fire.
Barry, Roger Clemens, Lance Armstrong...anyone doubt these guys were on the juice?

C'mon...like this is a shocker. At the risk of being cynical, I think most top athletes today are juiced up. No question about it. The bounty is just too great; someone will go for it, and THAT sets the bar for the rest.
How prevalent do you think steroids are in sports today? http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=640

Since she didn't test positive during the 2000 Olympics, I don't see why the medals should be taken away seven years later.

Marion Jones admission of taking steroids was a result of her inner circle dragging her down to the mud and they have succeeded.

Marion has shown courage today far above what we normally see from celebrities in our culture. We are by nature prone to ignore problems, excuse ourselves when we're caught, and go on making the same mistakes. But by her humble admission of wrongdoing, asking forgiveness from all, and resigning from track and field world she has been a light to the entire nation. She has done more in one statement for the younger generation than 100 Olympic gold medals - and I pray that she will come to enjoy future blessing beyond her imagination. My humblest admiration for your brave actions!

I DON'T REALLY FEEL AS THOUGH YOU CAN BLAME HER "INNER CIRCLE", THE MEDIA OR THE SO-CALLED REWARDS OF WINNING THE GOLD MEDALS ON ANYONE, BUT MARION. SHE WELL KNEW THE DANGER OF BEING CAUGHT ON THE JUICE. IF U ARE NOT AS GOOD AS THE OTHER ATHELETES ACCEPT LIFE AS IT IS. I REALLY LIKED MARIONS' ATHLETIC ABILITY. HER BASKETBALL SKILLS ARE NOT WHAT THEY APPEARED TO BE EITHER. WHO KNOWS HOW LONG SHE HAS BEEN ON THE JUICE, MAYBE SINCE HER CAROLINA DAYS.

Marion Jones is a person, long before she ran her first race or hit a baseball in little leauge. I have done things that I've come later to regret as a teen and a adult and stick around I may do a couple more things before I die that I will come to regret also, Marion said she was sorry, her pain is deeper than we could possibly know. We need to back up off of her, and let her raise her children. If a former president can lie, and not remember a conversations. Marion stay strong, do not hate the player, hate the game.

She made a mistake. Like everyone does. Some worse than others. She is still a great athlete and should be recognized. Who were the people surrounding her? and Did they have an influence in what she did? We don't know... She should keep striving and use this as a hard lesson. People do bounce back.

If it was her coach who offered her the steroids under the guise of something else, he's the one who we should be furious at. Marion Jones won at everything else for years and years before she played track, and probably could have taken the track medal without the steroids, but he convinced her to take them because everone else was doing it, and she needed 'an edge'. Also, I too think her confession was an act of bravery. She minced no words, and was very harsh on herself. She is much more courageous than all those he-men baseball players who have been caught, and who will probably be hiding in the bushes from here to eternity. Sure, she told some big lies, but which one of us hasn't. At least she came clean, and is in full agreement with any penalty the courts deem to give her. She an easy one to take down. Let's see them convict some of those big bad multi-million dollar baseball players of the exact same kind of charge. But I'm not holding my breath. What a mess.
