Track and field superstar Marion Jones was sentenced this morning to six months in prison for lying to federal investigators about the BALCO steroid ring and for lying about a check-fraud scheme involving her ex-boyfriend, the Olympic sprinter Tim Montgomery. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas, who had previously indicated that he would give Jones a stiffer sentence than prosecutors had recommended.
Lying to investigators is a serious crime, but the subject of athletes using steroids seems better suited for the International Olympic Committee and the track and field governing bodies to police for themselves, not for the federal government to get involved in.
Check fraud, however, has the potential to harm its victims, and that part of this story -- which has made fewer headlines than her involvement in BALCO -- makes it harder to feel sympathy for Jones. Montgomery, who is the father of Jones' son, has already been convicted of the check scam. By lying to U.S. Department of Homeland Security agents about it, Jones was trying to help Montgomery steal from innocent victims.
Jones must begin her sentence two months from today, March 11. The photo shows Jones, appearing to be in good spirits, entering Federal Court in White Plains, New York this morning.

I cannot believe she was sentenced to 6 months in jail when those slut teen stars got 6 hours jail time for multiple DUIs. There is someting wrong with our justice system. This inquisition has McCarthy's name written all over it.

There is a big difference in being stopped for dui or other charges vs. lying to the federal Government. Quite simply they don't play; moreover they won't even take you to court unless they have air tight evidence against you. Simply don't lie to the feds if they catch you. Because they no more than you think. In all fairness they do give you an opportunity to come clean. This is not like being down at your local precinct and the cops saying they have evidence so that you can incriminate yourself. When the feds say they got you believe me they got you. Take the deal and plead out and in most cases surely in Mrs. Jones case she would have gotten a slap on the wrist. Primarily the Feds just want you to tell the truth, so they can move on to more pressing issues. If you waste their time in court they will nail your butt to the wall.

Judge Karas stupidly remarked that "athletes in society ... serve as role models to children around the world. When there is a widespread level of cheating, it sends all the wrong messages." Why should athletes be considered role models? Sports is entertainment and nothing more. Most children should be encouraged to be teachers, doctors, engineers, nurses, mechanics, etc., rather than wasting their time aspiring to something (a pro sports figure) that very few can actually achieve. Too much importance is placed on sports and too much is expected of people who are not professional athletes because they are good role models, but are professional athletes because they excel at their game.

I can't believe this. The guys who actually need to be in prison are out on the streets. Something is wrong with our justice system. The sex teacher received probation the first round.

People don't become Feds for money, they do it for power. They take it as a personal insult if you lie to them. Ask Martha Stewart.

She lied, she cheated, and only after getting caught did she show any remorse, too bad, she got what she deserves. Those on her relay team may also lose their medals, and if they knew she was "juicing" then they deserve losing them. Maybe when others see how someone who is a cheater effects them, then maybe the old "what happens in the locker room stays there" will be discarded and the "pure" athletes will wise up and start pointing fingers.

"Do as I say and not as I do" adage huh?. Wonder if, as true sports fans, we really care if the athletes are juicing. At the end we really love seeing those 8 second 100 meter dashes, and all those home runs, not to mention the slam dunks from the free throw line, and those thunderous hits on the football field. Heck, we pay a lot of money to see them, and to buy the gear their sponsors sell us. Do we really care if they are enhancing? I don’t know. Just let me find out Tiger is hitting over 320 yard drives cause he is juicing and I’ll feel better about my game. It’s gotta be the shoes.

I am quite relieved that she was sentenced.People need to realise that there are consequences to their actions.Jail time should give her enough time to reflect on what she has done to rob herself of what she apparently worked her whole life to achieve.
This is a message to all athletes not to be influenced by dishonesty and dishonest people. We can all achieve goals we set in our lives the honest way.Failure to comply with the laws will result in punishment in some form. I knew from the start she was guilty, but I am relieved that she was able to finally admit. Now she can move on to another chapter in her life embracing her wonderful family.( Obadele Thompson) is a former neighbour of mine. I sure hope she puts this behind her and not let it marr her life. She can rise again but as a child of God and not a victim of fame. God bless!!

The fact that she is involved in a check fraud charge confirms that she is basically a dishonest person, so let's hope that some jail time will help her.

Sure are all the Holywood stars and pop stars who are deemde to be role models by the judge going to confess and get sentenced?
the woman is broke with two young kids for G'd sake!
She already suffered humilation and alienation now she has to be burnt at the stake!
Disgusting -this judge jeffreys has zero compassion. if she run over someone and killed them she would have got a suspended sentence

If my children were to take Marion Jones as a role model, I would support and applaud their choice. She is definitely a lady of character and in no way deserves the penalty she received. More community service would have been so much more beneficial to so many. With his new situation in a drug rehab program, Michael Vick may end up serving not much more time than Marion. Is that fair? He too lied to the feds. Where is Barry Bonds? This judge while not overstepping his bounds, certainly used poor judgment. I hope he reconsiders prior to her being jailed.

I REALLY THINK THAT SHE IS ONE OF THE REALLY GOOD PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD THAT GOT CAUGHT UP IN SOME NOT SO GREAT STUFF. ( YET OJ RUNS FREE TIME AND TIME AGAIN) GO FIGURE. IF WE ARE GOING TO START TAKING AWARDS AWAY FROM PEOPLE BECAUSE OF MISTAKES THEY HAVE MADE, WELL WE SHOULD START CLEANING OUT ALL OF THE HALL OF FAMES, BOXING,(TAKE A LOOK A HOLYFIELD IN HIS PRIME) YOU THINK TYSON WENT CRAZY JUST BECAUSE OF HIS UPBRINGGING, PLEASE, GIVE ME A BREAK. IF CLEMENS IS NOT TAKEN DOWN, I WILL START TO BELIEVE THAT THIS COUNTRY IS REALLY RACIST. AND THIS IS COMING FROM A WHITE MAN. I REALLY HOPE JONES CAN BE GIVEN THE SECOND CHANCE THAT SHE REALLY DESERVES.

President Bush lied about the weapons of mass destruction. The Federal government has not been saints by any means. So please don't hold that dim light up. This country was built on lies and deceit.
Ask the Native Americans and some of Mrs. Jones ancestors. How many countries have the Federal Govt. raided? How many dictators have they supported?

All people make mistakes. Sometimes you know the risk, other times you don't. Should she have told the truth? Absolutely-but she did admit to the use, which is more than can be said about others. She stepped up to take her punishment. That is much more admirable than she is being given credit for. I think suspending the sentence would be the right thing to do. Her life is forever changed and she will probably punish herself by the embarrassment and loss of face than anything we can do to her.
