Team USA took a very early lead in the overall medal standings at the 2008 Summer Olympics today when the American women's fencing team swept the sabre event.
Mariel Zagunis took the gold medal by beating Sada Jacobson in the final, while Rebecca Ward became America's first 2008 medalist by winning the bronze medal match. Those three sabre medals make the United States the only country with three medals so far in these Olympics.
China leads the gold medal count with two, picking up golds in shooting and weightlifting. The only other country with multiple medals is South Korea, with a judo gold and a shooting silver.
The other golds that have been awarded so far have gone to athletes from the Czech Republic, Spain and Romania.
