More Opening Ceremonies Fakery: Cute Girl Singer's Vocals Came From Another Girl

The Opening Ceremonies were both expensive and amazing, with unreal coordination of 2,008 drummers, 2,008 oarsmen and the largest LED screen anyone has ever seen. It generated rave reviews and extremely good ratings for NBC.

But in the week since then, we've seen that some of the events were not everything the seemed. First it was the fireworks, which actually were CG-enhanced and digitally inserted into the broadcast because a) it was hazy that night and b) helicopters shouldn't fly near fireworks.

That makes some sense, even if it was a black eye for the event organizers. But now it's come out that the adorable nine-year-old girl who sang during the Chinese flag presentation was a fake. She is absolutely adorable, but we don't know if she can sing a lick. It seems that a seven-year-old with perfect pitch was the actual singer, but in one of the final rehearsals, a top Communist party official watching the performance decided that she wasn't cute enough to take the stage--she had buck teeth, which were deemed to be unacceptable for putting China's best face foward.
"This was a last-minute question, a choice we had to make," the ceremony's musical designer, Chen Qigang, said. "Our rehearsals had already been vetted several times - they were all very strict. When we had the dress rehearsals, there were spectators from various divisions, including above all a member of the politburo who gave us his verdict: we had to make the swap."
Talk about a tough lesson, after going through a grueling competition with countless other singers, seven-year-old Yang Peiyi had to be told that she wasn't cute enough to sing at the Opening Ceremonies, even if her voice was going to be used.

It seems that this is one time where the Opening Ceremonies keeps getting worse the more we hear about it. And what's baffling is that it's all things that really weren't that significant. A few less fireworks and a girl with buck teeth would have never been noticed.
