American Ryan Lochte won the gold medal in the 200-meter backstroke tonight, edging out fellow American Aaron Peirsol and breaking the world record in the process.
Peirsol and Lochte entered the Games as the co-favorites, with Peirsol, who won gold in the event in 2004 and silver in 2000, considered by most to have a slight edge over the less experienced Lochte. But after Arkady Vyatchanin of Russia took an early lead, it was Lochte who made the late surge and Peirsol unable to catch him.
Lochte won't have long to celebrate, as he has a duel with Michael Phelps in the 200m individual medley in less than half an hour.

Damn it Aaron! So close to repeating in both events. Good for Lochte though. Silver is nothing to scoff at. I can't wait for the medley relay.
