Michael Phelps is a perfect 7-for-7, by one one-hundredth of a second.
If it had been a 95-meter butterfly, Milorad Cavic would have been the gold medalist. But even though he shorted the wall and actually took his final stroke into the wall, Phelps somehow figured out how to win his seventh gold. He was saved by the fact that Cavic's was actually a stroke short--he had to coast for way too long into the wall, which may explain the .01 second difference.
"That's usually when I can try to catch some ground if I need to. I had no idea the race was that close. I was lucky to get my hand in first," Phelps told Andrea Kremer right after the race. "I thought in perfect situations I could do it."If there is one bit of bad news for Phelps, it's that he finally didn't manage to set a world record. Ian Crocker's world record still stands, although Crocker probably isn't going to get a whole lot of consolation from that--he missed the bronze medal by .01 of a second. Phelps had come into the race with a shot of going a perfect 8-for-8 on world records, he'll have to settle for swimming for a record-breaking eighth gold tomorrow night.
Just give him the eighth gold now, after hauling down Cavic from a half-body length deficit at the turn, it's hard to see how Phelps and his teammates won't will their way to a gold in the 4X100 medley relay.
NBC has to be loving this. Not only is Phelps making a date with history everytime he hops into the pool, but he's been involved in two thrillng races as well--the 4X100 meter freestyle relay ranks as one of the most thrilling races in swimming history, and Phelps now has a .01 second win as well.

Andrea Kremer is horrible. After Phelps won the 100 fly in one of the most thrilling races ever, all she could think to ask him is a question probably given to her by a producer two weeks ago about how it feels to have won 7 gold medals. DID SHE NOT WATCH THE RACE???? Everybody else in the world wanted to know how he won THAT ONE RACE, why he chose to take a full stroke at the end. She was in the enviable position of being the first to interview him after an amazing performance and didn't have a clue. Phelps partially bailed her out by ignoring her question and talking about the race. Many of her questions throughout the swimming competition have been equally lame. Let's hope NBC sends her home instead of to another venue when the swimming ends.
Beast Mode
This is the only swim in the Olympics so far that I haven't known who won ahead of time (thanks NBC for showing events "live" in California) and man did I pick a good one to be surprised on. What an amazing swim by Phelps! I actually didn't believe it until I saw the replay from underwater. I can't wait for the medley relay!
Way to go phelps. All I would like to say is it's not fair. This guy is unbelievable. I would like to see someone give him some competitin and we would see the race of a lifetime. He would break records that would stay in the books for years to come. I wish you the best phelps!!!!
An amazing race.
PHELPS, what else can I say. OH, NBC coverage for the west coast is horrible. Three hours after the event actually took place. And tomorrow (Saturday, Sunday in Beijing) when Phelps goes for the record. We'll be getting it tape delayed. This is history in the making and tape delay is just horrible. Thank goodness for the internet. NBC gets a grade of F for West coast coverage. I prefer TRUE LIVE coverage. There's too much commentary. Get a clue NBC.
That HAS to be one of the best swimming races I've ever watched in the Olympics. I sense the record coming for Phelps after the final relay later today.
I do agree about the tape-delay problems with the NBC west coast coverage. I've actually gotten better "live" coverage watching a channel from another country. Canada's CBC Television out of British Columbia, which is available on cable in Washington state, does a much better job of covering events IMHO.
Check this out: It was recorded 8 years ago just a few minutes after an unknown 15-year-old qualified for his first Olympic team and set his sights on Mark Spitz record.
