American Shawn Johnson finally got her gold medal today in the balance beam, the last women's gymnastics competition of the Beijing Olympics. Fellow American Nastia Liukin won the silver. China's Cheng Fei got the bronze.
Johnson, a 16-year-old from Des Moines, entered the Olympics as the generally recognized best gymnast in the world, and her silver medals in the team competition, the individual all-around and the floor exercise were considered a bit of a disappointment.
Liukin finishes with a gold in the individual all-around, silvers in the team competition and the uneven bars in addition to the beam, and a bronze in the floor exercise.

if any american's don't like the result, why don't you guys host your own games in your backyard, give out gold, sliver and bronze to all americans and stay away from all international competition. stop complaining about underage chinese gymnasts, you americans had longer time to practice since you guys are older and more experience, and yet, you guys lost to younger chinese gymnasts? i won't be complaining if i were you guys. also, please drop the issue of underage, if americans stand for justice for all, then the girls should be innocent untill proven guilty. if you think they are underage, prove it, if you can't, then don't say anything. also, dose michael phelps take any preformance enhancing drugs just like so many american track and field stars, (eg, jones)? is he a cross bleed between a human and a space alien? do you think it is humane for him to just eat, sleep and swim? why don't we see his dad on tv, is he prevented to see his dad while he prepare for the olympics? if anyone finds phelps is not using any medications, is it because we don't have the technologies to confirm the test? will he agree to give enough sample so we can test it every 5 years until we confirm the test? also, for nastia, how many judge did you slept with to win the gold? also, how much did nastia pay the judges to have her daughter win the gold? how many judges were friends of nastia's dad? you don't see the world asking these questions because we are not sore losers like americans

IU love to read ignorant peoples internet comments. One get a basic education (work on your basic vocabulary, spelling, sentence structure, etc) Now the judges in the olympics have been fairly consistent across the various olympic events but to even the untrained eye (not the ignorant, unfortunately or those who are just bias against Americans in general) there were extreme and very notable irregulaities in the overall gymnastics judging (this includes trampoline, men and womens gymnastics, and other gymnastic events. unfortunately, that is just how it is and will need to be addressed after the olympics in order to reach a method of scoring that is more objective. Placing judges in place from countries that have never won an olympic medal in any event is at the very least questionable (reason for debate and change). These athletes work very hard all their lives for this one weeks opportunities and I think we owe them ALL the best and fairest chance to be credited with the results they earn. The international olympics federation has enough monitary support for them to hire and train specialized judges for events like a mni UN for olympics and train them in international events in the interim years. The judging would be more experienced and less people should have cause to complain. The chinese girls ARE underage, the one is only 13 years old and it was recently posted on the web from china on a web site that was discovered then rapidly taken down. The other girl is even younger. I think it is criminal to put those little girls under that kind of stress too early (though they have semmingly handled it very well) I feel sorry for the girls because I believe they were forced into this situation. they are undisputably great athletes but they are too young by international "agreement". They can be proven at their age through a simple independent dental exam. There are teeth that erupt after a certain age and to a specific degree in young people and this could definitivly prove or disprove their age. They should submit and are require to do so by olympic rules. I believe that in the near future (post-2008 olympics) these two youngsters will be stripped of their awards. A travesty but fair. Terrible for the two girls but fair to the world of olympic athletes and the world audience too. Play fair (everyone (( USA included)) or face the brutal consequnnces of justice.

Hey loser, there is a test for the gymnasts, it's a bone test and the USA team is going to call for the test after the Olympics. It's not whether they are better, it's that they broke the rules just like Jones. We are not above the rules and the Chinese shouldn't be either. So obviously you come from a country not medaling so shut the hell up and go back to your pathetic country.

Talk about complaining!!! I can tell by your lack of skill in the English language you are probably spewing sour grapes. Also, if you had been paying attention, you woul dknow that Michael Phelps is estranged from his father, and divorced his mother many years ago. Get the facts before you spew this kind of angst.

I do not usually comment to these things but you obviously are not a american and any country who takes children away from there parents at age 3 to 6 in order to make the best at any sport should be shot. It doesn't help now does it because ours are still over all the best.
And for his father not being there does not matter. You don't need a man in your life to be great in sports.
You are truely a dick!

why did you have to have a little girl lip-sync in the opening ceremonies? why was your country trying to cover up the story of the dancer getting paralized while practicing for the opening ceremonies? why is all your media censored? and as for gymnastics, you say our girls had more time to prepare, why does your country take your female gymnist away from thier parents at the age of 3 or so and they only see thier family occasionally..why is money so much more important to the families versus thier daughters?....nobody is perfect

We are human,so we have to follow the rule we set. It's a fair game. I don't blame Chinese people because cheating is very common under communist regime.

It seems to me you should pull the plank out of your own eye, brother, before pointing out the speck in someone elses. You can't accuse someone of being a whiner and then turn right around and whine SUPER loudly yourself. Hypocrisy and all that, I'm afraid. May want to work on that rage thing. Just a thought.

Wow...Someones a little bitter. Sounds like my 4 yr old when he is trying to prove a point.
China did have their Olympics in their backyard and it is evident that they are giving the medals to their children. Rules are Rules. You are suppose to be 16 to compete. I am sure that we had a few that were not quite the age to compete but were solid performers and they are watching at home on TV. I hope the committe investigates and strips China of their medals. Congrats to the American girls for keeping their composure. And proud of them we are.
Let them test Phelps all they want. If they find he is doping make him pay. Nobody deserves any glory if they are cheating. Lets not forget thought that plenty of other athletes from other countries have been busted for using performance enhancers as well. If all Phelps wishes to do is eat, swim, and sleep then let him. He has made a career out of doing this. He is just living the American dream. It could be worse, he could have been picked at the age of 3 and forced to swim like the Chinese girls who are forced into a communist gymnastic "machine" and only allowed to see their parents once a year. Its disturbing when the Olympics can overshadow human rights.
Im just glad to be an American.

Come on! We haven't solid evidence to accuse Phelps while you don't have solid evidence to criticize under age performer either. That's equal. Don't you know compared with western girls, eastern girls who have the same age look much younger?
Even if it is true, under age problem is nothing compared with scandals of performance enhancer, some biggest of which happened on US athletes. Thats much, much more shameful. If you want to say China cheats, don't forget US is always the biggest liar in the world.
You're in no position to criticize "communist gymnastic machine" because you know nothing about it. Chinese young athletes chose their way totally on their will, not on government's. The government only serves as a organizing role. If you have any doubt about it, refer to 《Discovery Atlas: China》.
As a Chinese, I'm really happy that Phelps achieved his ambitious goal. I watched every swimming game he participated and was cheering for him. I used to worry that nationalism will be a big problem for the Chinese. But I'm really happy to find their solicitude and tolerance for game losers, especially after Liu Xiang's failure. On the contrary, I'm sorry to find that many Americans just can't afford to lose.

Excellent post... I agree with you 100%... Go America.... I am proud of all Americans competing in the Olympics... Gold, Silver, Bronze or no metal at all...
It is wonderful to live in a country that you have a choice... not like the children of China....
The Chinese girls were great, but they should have waited until they were old enough to enter the competition legally. If everyone else has to abide by the rules, so should they.

You should learn to use Spellcheck when spewing forth such nonsense! Since when does Nastia even have a daughter? ("how much did nastia pay the judges to have her daughter win the gold?")
I am wondering if China is holding judges' passports....
