With one day of competition to go in Beijing, the China will win the gold medal tally for the first time in the history of the Olympic Games. China won two gold medals on Saturday.
China has now won 49 gold medals, an insurmountable lead over second-place Team USA, with 34. China's golds have come from a diverse group of sports, with gymnastics, weightlifting, diving and shooting leading the way.
The Americans have been strong in many of their old standby sports, with swimming giving Team USA 31 medals and track and field adding 23.

Not to mention badminton (3) and ping pong (4). Where's Forrest Gump when America needs him?

I'd like to see pea-shooting and corn-shucking in the medal sports as well.

No, also made in China are new Chinese names for all the athletes names... all 10,000 of them. Can you imagine when the USA held the olympics we gave all the athletes new American names. Check the story in the Wall Street Journal Saturday 8/23. The Chinese people can't connect the real names with future news of the athletes after the games, no Heros but made in China ones.

I congradulate the Chinese medalists for their hard work over the last decade. It is really amazing to see a country stand behind the Olympics like they have. Whatever the country's government stands for or promotes, the athletes are non-political and should be applauded for their individual achievements.

AT - good point, but it's also worth noting that there were around 100 countries competing and Phelps got more gold medals than all but nine of those countries.

Who cares if phelps got more medals?
It's not possible to get more than ONE medal in many other Olympic sports... frankly, swimming just has too many medals to give out.
