China completed the 2008 Summer Olympics with 51 gold medals, leading the gold medal count for the first time in the nation's history. Team USA was second with 36 gold medals, the same number it won in Athens in 2004.
China won its final two gold medals today when Zou Shiming and Zhang Xiaoping became the nation's first Olympic boxing champions. France won the final gold medal of these Games when its men's handball team won the gold.
The Americans led the overall medal count with 110, making it the fourth straight Olympics that Team USA has come home with the most medals. China finished second in total medals with 100. Russia was third in both gold medals (23) and total medals (72).

take away the 6 or 8 gold medals China won by cheating at gymnastics and the USA wins the gold race.

Well the way I see it the US won for most golds awarded by athlete, if you count the US has more gold medalists than China by far, why? because the US is better at team sports and relays than China, so we have more gold medalists than China, they have more events won, but they have around 62 athletes awarded a gold medal and the US has more than 130. How do you like that? The US has more gold medal olympians than China. Check it out.

China forces little children to compete in gymnastics, and the government sanctions this cheating by changing their passports. So, subtract the golds, silvers and bronze medals that these little children earned, against the rules. What a shame...and the government was complicit in this cheating.

The tie breaker thing in gymnastics was stupid. The Aussie judge clearly under scored Nastia and that is why she got silver instead of gold. They should let them both wear the gold if they felt they both earned it. And don't even get started on the vault. That was just wrong. And it wasn't China's fault either, it was the judging. Horrible, incompitant judging. Our girls deserved better. If it was found the chinese girl was too young, they will get their golds but it wont feel the same for them. They got robbed of the experience.

I certainly don't think China is a great country, but let me tell you this:
The US really does deserve two more gold medals...one for showing off like no one else and one for being the worst loser in the world!
China was superior to the US and since Americans apparently don't like China, they can't accept that, it's against their ego. The US won the total medal count and came in 2nd place concerning gold medals, that should be appreciated.

@h20: Yes if it is determined that the gymnasts are of legal competition age, then that is the end of the issue. Reason being: that is the only issue in question to begin with

maessendominik, really, you think so? Americans showing off more than let's say...the ridiculous show the Jamaican's track team put on...or the silliest of Britain's lightweight boxer (that I know embarrassed the heck out of proper Brits)? Truth is, they all show off, and rightly so. So why do people like you and other members of the EU (which you obviously belong to) always point to sour grapes on the part of the US? Sore losers? If your country won silver behind the Chinese gymnasts and we found out they were underaged, we would fight for and be just as vocal for your country. And you can't say we don't already have a track record for doing so; unless, of course, you're too young to remember. And lastly, the Chinese more talented than the US? Oh, my God, please. Everyone forgets they have a pool of what, 1.5 billion people to pick from? We have something like 280 million? And statistically, it's not even close.

I don't agree that we are being whiners re: The gold medal/ gymnastics. It is easy to see the Chinese girls are underage look at the difference of the Chinese females with the same supposed age in the other venues. The Chinese girls were practically babies. We will never get the truth because the "Commie govt" issues the birth certificates and passports. They have found proof they weren't the correct age but It will be swept under the rug. The younger the kid the more pliable their bones are and the more they have no fear as they haven't been injured yet. The scoring for the most part was in the pits. All of the kids work hard for the olympics. If they scored even there should of been two golds awarded. They did It at Salt lake City when the Russians in my opinion really won but the Canadian couple complained. To the person who said we should get a gold medal for being a bad loser and showing off..apparently you haven't many "Olympics" under your belt or you would know all countries complain when they think they have been underated HELLO.. I also take issue with the remark we show off..I could say we are the best :) because we are. UhmmmI think Kenya gets the award for ther most "showing off" or didn't you watch "Bolt" & Company? They don't show off any of them. When they win they can celebrate...but not according to you. I guess you are just another "hate America" zealous person.

I certainly don't hate China by any stretch of the imagination, but let's look at this in a serious light. Everyone forget about the Gymnastics debate, because seriously, if a 10 year Chinese girl can beat our athletes, more power to them. My issue is with the medals that the Chinese won as opposed to U.S. golds. We won most of the major sports. We won both Mens and Womens basketball, Womens soccer, Mens volleyball, gymnastics individual all-around (also silver), balance beam (and silver), floor routine (and silver), tied for uneven bars, both 4x400 meters relays, the mens decathlon, gold, silver and bronze in mens 400 m and 400 m hurdles, golds in other track events, and don't get me started on the swimming golds we dominated on. Now let's compare to China's 5 golds in badminton and table tennis? 8 golds in weightlifting? 6 golds in archery/shooting? 7 golds in diving? 4 golds in martial arts and of course, 11 in gymnastics. That about sums them up. There are some rowing medals and such, but really? Is there a question of superiority in the Olympics? How could that possibly be? We were in the thick of every major sporting event and if we didn't win/dominate them, we were in 2nd place. If you really want an argument, come at us with something more than a gold medal count, come at us with more than table tennis and badminton, come us with some legitimate arguments, because I haven't seen any yet. Not one has come close. Do the research and come back at me with more than an American show off festival, because I've seen none of the sort, unless that's what you consider straight up dominance across the spectrum of the Summer games. This is why the total medal count should matter, because we dominate the major areas and aren't close to losing that. Show a little patriotism and support your country or just live her and soak up the benefits like the hundreds of Olympians who live and thrive in our country and support their homeland. So to all the U.S. nay sayers out there, I say to you... U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.!U.S.A.!U.S.A.! (I apologize for any spelling or grammatical errors. I was pretty fired up.)

China grooms its competitors from early childhood. That explains their success at the Olympics. The Soviet Union did the same with the same winning results. Thankfully, most countries do NOT place such a burden on their children.

Ok, looks like I should've expressed myself more clearly for my comment was misunderstood.
When I talked about the US deserving the two gold medals, I was not talking about the US Olympic team. They were a fair team and did not show off or were sore losers. I was talking about all the American people reacting to China winning so many gold medals by posting comments on websites like this one for instance saying the US is the best and some athletes weren't treated in a fair way etc. I did not want to offend the US athletes who obviously did a great job. My comment was mainly a reaction to the comments posted earlier. Don't get me wrong again, being proud of the US team is more than justified and there's nothing wrong about patriotism, but only as long as it's not overdone. Thinking you are great and loving your country: yes. Thinking you are the greatest ever and complaining about some Asian country having won more gold medals using unfair methods or whatever, I don't want to make a list, that is so unnecessary and you won't win friends like that. Sure, it is questionable if all Chinse athletes were old enough and it is anything but OK if they really let participate underage girls and the Chinese methods to bring their athletes up are cruel and inhuman, but that is another sad topic. Let's face the facts: say some Chinese had been too young and some had won using doping substance, they still would've won the most gold medals. And concerning the medal count: say a country wins 95 bronze medals and another 94 gold medals...can you see the problem? If you now applied the total medal count to determine the "real" winner of the games, you would have to face some problems. Maybe there should be a ranking using points, if you win a gold medal, you get 4 points, 2 for silver and 1 for bronze. At the end, you look who's got the most points. Not a perfect solution, but better than only counting the amount of medals. And one guy pointed out that there are 1.3 billion people in China whereas there are "only" 300 million in the US. Don't say the US doesn't have enough people, compare it to other countries. The UK has about 50 million and even the European country (since someone thinks I'm European) with the largest population (Russia left out), which is Germany, has only about 82 million. And I think the US supports their athletes more and better than any other country in the world, most countries simply can't afford that. All things considered, there can never be the perfectly fair and just Olympics, it can never even come close to that, only look at the immense differnces between an African country and a country from the Western World, what is the Republic of Niger supposed to say? I hope I could settle some things. Finally, let me just say this: I love the United States of America. That doesn't mean I have to like everything about it, though. As an American, you can be patriotic and critical at the same time, that should never be forgotten.

Wow, that whatever comment is hard to beat! Didn't think anyone would get me, but that did it. Don't know how I'll come back on that. The way the Olympics are going, adding ridiculous sports like trampoline, synchronized diving, badminton, table tennis, etc, and threatening to take away baseball and softball leads many to not pay much attention. I guess that's how so many misguided folks can feel that China is so superior to us in winning golds in so many lesser "sports," if they can be called that. Sorry, but I don't give a damn about diving, martial arts, badminton, table tennis, weightlifting, or some of the lesser "sports" that they won gold in. I'm glad we dominated the gold standard in all the main events and no one will ever convince me otherwise that we prevailed yet again in the Summer Olympics. Trust me, I take our Winter Olympic butt whoopings easily, cause we always get slaughtered. I'm also very glad that our athletes are not plucked from their homes as small children, only to see their parents once a year to train endlessly just so that they can feel they had a great showing in the Olympics. Didn't prove anything to me, but like the genius ahead of me stated.... whatever.

Yeah Michael, China won in mostly the lesser sports like badminton, table tennis ... oh wait where do we put BEACH VOLLEYBALL? Sport is about pushing physical and mental prowess to the edge of plausibility. I agree that "popularity" is probably the lousiest excuse for removing a sport. But discounting the other sports as you have just done is shallow, disrespectful and foolish.
For the mission of the Olympics to have a chance, sports from across the whole world needs to be incorporated, not just traditionally American and western sports. FYI almost every school in East Asia and South East Asia has badminton and table tennis teams. Not including these sports would be the true disgrace.
You really are representative of the American world view - if it ain't done our way, it ain't the right way. From the letter-size paper and 3-hole puncher to the American hero-complex. It's not that the world outside north America is anti-US, we just don't speak the same language.
