Shawn Johnson has been everywhere this week. Her latest stop was at the Democratic National Convention, where she said the Pledge of Allegiance:
(Video via Cousins of Ron Mexico at The Big Lead.)
A couple of questions occur to me about the above video, which includes the added bonus of a great rendition of the national anthem.
1. Is there a risk that Johnson is getting overexposed here? From Beijing to Letterman to Des Moines to Denver, does she have a chance to just be a regular teenager?
2. What's the deal with Olympic gymnasts and saying the Pledge at the conventions? Mary Lou Retton has said the Pledge at the Republican National Convention. Is it just that conventions usually happen shortly after the Summer Olympics and so gold medal gymnasts are usually in the news, or have focus groups determined that swing voters enjoy seeing patriotic gestures from gymnasts?

That was a very mediocre versions of the "Star Spangled Banner". I almost always get chills and teary eyed when I hear that song done properly, not even close. Why can't it be performed with respect and without the extra notes?

it's obvious this person was jealous. I thought it was done beautifully and the extra notes made it that much better. kudo's to Jennifer's rendition!

Shawn Johnson is a sweet All American girl, with a will of iron.
She is a fierce competitor , and also displays sportsmanship which is admirable.
In addition, she seems very level headed and remarkably mature for one so young.
She is a great example to American teen-agers, (and cute as a button to boot!)
We wish her well and look forward to seeing her compete for many years to come!
